Caran d'Ache has been making art materials in Geneva since 1915 — still independent, still family-owned, still manufacturing entirely in their Swiss workshops. The name traces back through Russian and Turkish to the word for graphite, a fitting origin for a brand that has spent over a century refining how pigment meets paper.

The milestones are real: the world's first mechanical clutch pencil in 1929, the world's first water-soluble colored pencil in 1931, and the Neocolor II water-soluble wax pastels in 1972. Today the Luminance 6901 remains one of the most lightfast colored pencils available anywhere. Every product is made under one roof in Geneva, using FSC-certified materials and in-house pigment formulations.
