The Caran d'Ache Supracolor Soft Aquarelle 12-set is a compact, dual-function watercolor pencil kit covering the core primary and secondary spectrum. Used dry, the 3.8mm soft water-soluble core behaves as a creamy colored pencil with strong hiding power and a smooth, controlled laydown. Introduce a wet brush and the pigments dissolve immediately into fluid, luminous watercolor washes without leaving chalky residue. Twelve essential colors — enough to test the full wet-and-dry range of the Supracolor format and mix a broad range of secondary tones on the go.

Each hexagonal cedar barrel is coated in a color-matched lacquer. Excellent lightfastness across the palette ensures dried washes remain bright and stable over time. Stored in a branded metal studio tin — compact enough for plein-air sketching and travel illustration work.

Individual colors are also available as single pencils if you want to expand the palette with specific shades.

FAQ
  • How do Supracolor pencils work as watercolors? Apply color dry to paper, then run a wet brush over the marks to dissolve the pigment into smooth, transparent watercolor washes. The pigment disperses fully without gritty deposits or streaking.
  • Can dry layers be applied over dried watercolor washes? Yes. Once a wash has dried, dry pencil work can be applied on top for fine detail, outlines, or texture — making the Supracolor format well suited for mixed dry-and-wet illustration techniques.
  • Is the 12-set suitable for plein-air work? Yes. The compact metal tin, lightweight pencil format, and dual dry-and-wet capability make it a practical travel kit for location sketching and watercolor studies.
  • Are the colors mixable to produce a wider range? Yes. The 12 colors cover the core mixing spectrum. A broad range of secondary and tertiary tones is achievable through layering dry colors and blending wet washes, though larger sets reduce the mixing required.
