The Clairefontaine Paint-ON Gris A4 is a professional heavyweight grey paper pad for daily illustration, portrait work, graphic design, and typography. The neutral grey tone is mass-dyed directly into the pulp during production — solid and uniform through the full sheet thickness, with no white edges when cut and no surface degradation under erasing or heavy media. The pre-established mid-tone shifts the way colors read on the surface: shadows deepen immediately with charcoal or dark ink, highlights pop instantly with white gel pen or gouache, and mid-tone colors appear with more saturated energy than they would on white paper.

The 250 g/m² cellulose stock handles heavy erasing, scratching, and fluid layering without tearing or pilling. Dual-sided surface — fine grain face for charcoal, pastels, and pencil work, smooth reverse for ink pens, acrylic markers, and calligraphy gel pens. Thirty sheets in the standard A4 format for portfolio entries, student assignments, and daily studio work. Top-glued for fray-free sheet separation. Acid-free, pH-neutral, PEFC certified.

Common Questions
  • What is the practical advantage of working on grey paper versus white? The neutral grey acts as a pre-established mid-tone, meaning shadows and highlights are immediately readable without laying down a base layer first. This significantly speeds up value-based drawing and makes tonal contrast more intuitive — particularly for portrait work, urban sketching, and high-contrast illustration.
  • Is the grey coloration stable under wet media and UV exposure? Yes. The mass-dyed process runs the grey tone uniformly through the full sheet thickness during pulp production. The acid-free, pH-neutral formula is UV stable, meaning the grey tone will not shift, yellow, or fade over time under normal display conditions.
  • Can this pad handle both wet and dry media on the same sheet? Yes. The 250 g/m² weight provides enough structural rigidity to handle wet gouache, acrylic washes, and liquid ink alongside dry charcoal and pastel on the same sheet without significant warping or surface breakdown.
